Diagnostic visit: $150 to $350

A diagnostic covers a technician on site with a meter, a laptop, and roof access: string voltages and currents, inverter fault logs, monitoring gateway status, a visual on the array and attachments, and a written finding with a repair quote. The bottom of the range is a ground-level inverter check on a single-story home in the Cape. The top is a full roof walk on a two-story tile roof in Estero with a monitoring gateway that has not reported in a year. Many diagnostics never happen, because three photos (array, inverter label, monitoring screen) answer the question for free. When the visit leads to a repair, the diagnostic fee is applied to the job.

Detach and reset: $200 to $400 per panel

This is the job Southwest Florida needs most. Hurricane Ian impacted 52,514 Lee County structures on September 28, 2022 by the National Hurricane Center’s count, and Florida Statute 627.7011(5) lets insurers require replacement of roofs 15 years and older that cannot pass an inspection showing five years of remaining life. Roofs are coming off with solar on them, and the roofer will not touch the panels.

The per-panel price covers the whole cycle: detach 1 to 3 days before tear-off, string labeling, panel storage on site, conduit capped and disconnects locked out, then rails, panels, wiring, rapid shutdown, and labeling on the new roof, followed by inverter startup, monitoring verification, and the final inspection. A 20-panel system is $4,000 to $8,000.

What moves the number:

  • Roof type. Shingle resets sit at the bottom. Tile resets sit at the top, because tile has to be lifted and re-set around every attachment and the flashing detail is more involved. Standing-seam metal with clamp attachments can be the cheapest of all.
  • Racking condition. Rails and clamps that come off clean get reused. Corroded hardware near the canals, or racking from an installer that used non-standard parts, means replacement.
  • Attachments. New flashed attachments are usually extra at $25 to $60 each, and a 20-panel array has 30 to 50 of them. Who sets them (roofer or solar crew) is agreed in writing before tear-off, because that is also who warrants the roof against leaks at those points.
  • Permit. Reinstalling an array after a re-roof is a permitted job in Lee County, and the county’s Solar-Photovoltaic guide requires signed and sealed wind-load documentation for the uplift zone where the panels sit. Permit and paperwork is $200 to $500.
  • Storage. On-site storage is included. Off-site storage for a job that stalls between tear-off and dry-in is quoted.

String inverter replacement: $1,500 to $3,500 installed

The range covers a like-for-like or upgraded residential unit in the 5 to 10 kW class, mounted, wired, and commissioned. A direct swap of a 6 kW string inverter with the same mounting footprint is the bottom. A 10 kW unit on a wall that needs a new disconnect, a rapid-shutdown transmitter, and conduit rework is the top. Add $200 to $500 for the permit and the utility interconnection update.

Two things push this job into judgment territory. First, a 12- to 15-year-old inverter from a brand that has left the U.S. residential market may have no like-for-like replacement, and the honest quote is a retrofit to a current SolarEdge or Enphase architecture, which costs more up front but restores per-panel monitoring. Second, FPL’s Tier 1 interconnection agreement requires a new application and agreement at least 30 calendar days before any modification that raises the system’s rated output, so a bigger inverter is a 30-day lead time, not a same-week job. Microinverter and optimizer replacement: $300 to $600 each

Enphase microinverters (M215, M250, IQ6, IQ7) and SolarEdge optimizers fail one at a time, and the unit itself is often covered by a 25-year manufacturer warranty. The price is roof access and labor: lift the panel, swap the unit, reconnect, re-provision it in the gateway, verify production. One unit on a single-story shingle roof is the bottom. One unit under a tile roof in a two-story gated community is the top. Several at once are cheaper per unit, because the roof access is shared. If the manufacturer supplies the replacement under warranty, you pay labor only.

Panel replacement: $400 to $900 per panel

Installed price for a replacement module, including removal of the damaged one, disposal, and re-connection. The hard part is not the labor. It is finding a panel that matches. Modules are discontinued within a few years of release, and a 2017 array cannot always take a 2026 panel of a different size and voltage without an electrical review. When a match does not exist, the options are a same-size panel from another maker with a compatibility check, a rearranged string, or, on a heavily damaged array, an insurance claim for the whole roof face. Wiring, connectors, conduit: $250 to $900

MC4 connectors corroded by salt air, rodent-chewed wiring under the array, conduit that pulled loose in Ian, junction boxes that filled with water. The bottom of the range is a connector pair replaced at a ground-level junction box. The top is a run of conduit and home-run wiring rebuilt across a roof. Fault-finding on an intermittent ground fault is billed as a diagnostic first.

Monitoring, cleaning, inspection, batteries

  • Monitoring gateway replacement, $300 to $800. An Enphase Envoy, SolarEdge gateway, or Tesla gateway that stopped reporting, replaced and re-provisioned. Sometimes the fix is a network change and lands at the diagnostic price.
  • Cleaning, $10 to $20 per panel, $150 to $250 minimum. Pollen, salt film near the water, bird droppings under the palms. Worth it when a production report shows the loss.
  • Inspection with production report, $200 to $400. Measured output against expected output for the system size and season, visual and thermal inspection, written report. Useful before a home sale, after a storm, or when you have no idea whether the thing has been working.
  • Battery diagnostic, $250 to $500. Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ, LG, Generac PWRcell. Module or gateway replacement is quoted per system.

What moves the number, in general

  • Panel count and roof type. The two biggest levers on any job.
  • Permit and interconnection. Lee County, the City of Cape Coral, Charlotte County, and the cities of Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Punta Gorda each issue their own permits. Fees are passed through at cost and itemized. FPL and LCEC paperwork is part of the job, not an add-on you discover later.

  • Equipment availability. Discontinued panels and inverters from defunct brands add lead time and sometimes cost.
  • Warranty status. If the manufacturer supplies the part, you pay labor only. We check before quoting.

How to use these numbers

Get a photo quote. Compare bids by scope: does the bid include the permit, the wind-load documentation, the utility filing, monitoring verification, and a final inspection? A low bid missing those lines is a different, worse product. And ask for the license: Florida Statute 489.105 defines who may install, alter, repair, and replace photovoltaic systems, and any bidder should show a Florida solar or electrical contractor license and insurance without being asked twice.
