Monitoring: why the app goes dark
Network changes. New router, new ISP, a Wi-Fi password change, a mesh system that put the gateway on a different subnet. Enphase Envoys, SolarEdge gateways, and Tesla gateways all need a path to the internet, and a surprising number were set up on a Wi-Fi network that no longer exists. Some were set up on a cellular modem the installer paid for, and the payments stopped when the installer did.
Power events. Hurricane Milton knocked out power to 129,000 LCEC and 111,000 FPL customers in Lee County at the county’s October 10, 2024 briefing, and outages of that length, followed by restoration surges, kill gateways and their power supplies. Ian on September 28, 2022 did the same at larger scale, and gateways mounted at garage height in the southeast Cape were under 6 to 9 feet of surge.
The installer’s account died. SunPower, Titan Solar Power, Pink Energy, Vision Solar, and ADT Solar all held the monitoring accounts for many of their customers. When the company closed, some portals simply went dark, even though the gateway underneath is still reporting to Enphase, SolarEdge, or Tesla. This is account work, not hardware, and it is the first step of the orphaned system service.
Dead hardware. Envoys and gateways are small computers in a hot garage. They fail. Replacement is $300 to $800 depending on the model, and the new unit has to be provisioned with the array’s microinverter or optimizer serial numbers so per-panel monitoring comes back.
Reporting but wrong. The app updates, but the numbers are nonsense: production equal to consumption, a panel that reads at night, a battery at 100 percent through a week of rain. Usually a current transformer installed backwards or on the wrong conductor, or a firmware issue. A diagnostic finds it.
Why monitoring matters more than it seems
Per-panel monitoring is the only way to catch the failure mode that costs Lee County owners the most money: one microinverter or optimizer dead, then two, then four, each costing a few percent of production that nobody notices on a utility bill that swings with the air conditioning anyway. Enphase’s current U.S. warranty requires claims within 90 days of discovering the defect and says covered products should be continuously connected to the internet so defects can be diagnosed remotely. A dark app is how a warranty-covered failure turns into an out-of-pocket one. Restoring monitoring is the cheapest insurance on the system.
Batteries: what fails and what a diagnostic finds
Batteries are newer in this market than panels, and most Lee County installs date from 2019 onward: Tesla Powerwall 2 and 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P and 10, LG RESU, and Generac PWRcell paired with Generac inverters (the Pink Energy systems were largely Generac). What goes wrong:
- Communications. The battery talks to a gateway, the gateway talks to the inverter and the internet, and any link can drop. The battery then sits idle or defaults to a safe mode. Often fixed at the diagnostic price.
- Configuration. Set for self-consumption rather than backup reserve, so the battery is empty when the storm arrives. Set with the wrong grid profile after a utility change. Set with backup loads the battery cannot carry. All configuration, all fixable.
- Backup switching. The Tesla Backup Gateway, Enphase IQ System Controller, or a separate transfer switch is what islands the house in an outage. If it fails to open, the battery cannot power the house without back-feeding the grid, so it does nothing. If it fails to close, the house stays on battery after the grid returns until it runs flat.
- Cell and module faults. The battery management system logs cell imbalance, over-temperature, and capacity fade. A garage in the Cape in August is at the top of every battery’s temperature range. Module replacement is a warranty case where the maker covers it and a quoted job where it does not.
- Generac PWRcell specifics. Owners of former Pink Energy systems have dealt with PWRcell inverter and SnapRS component faults for years. Generac’s own warranty on the hardware is what remains; Pink Energy’s Chapter 7 filing on October 7, 2022 ended everything else.
A battery diagnostic ($250 to $500) reads the BMS and gateway logs, checks cell balance and state of health, verifies the backup switching with a controlled test, checks the configuration against what you actually want the battery to do, and confirms the battery is on your FPL or LCEC interconnection. That last one matters: an energy storage system added to a net-metered array is a modification under FPL’s Tier 1 interconnection agreement, and both utilities require the local building official’s certificate before it goes into service. A battery installed without a closed permit is common on orphaned systems and surfaces at a home sale.
Permits
A gateway or Envoy swap that changes nothing electrical is generally not a permitted job. A battery module replacement, a new backup gateway or transfer switch, or a battery added to an existing array is electrical work: Lee County’s Solar-Photovoltaic permit guide requires a permit to modify any photovoltaic system, and the City of Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Estero, and Punta Gorda each permit their own. Battery work also has to meet the Florida Building Code 8th Edition (2023) and 2020 NEC requirements on location, clearances, and rapid shutdown. We pull it and close it.

Warranty, honestly
Tesla, Enphase, LG, and Generac publish warranties on their battery hardware that survive an installer’s bankruptcy, typically 10 years with a throughput or cycle limit. Like the microinverter warranties, they cover the part and generally exclude the labor to swap it, and they require the owner or a servicing contractor to open the case. The installer’s promise to “handle everything for 25 years” ended when the installer did. We file the claim, receive the part, and do the labor at the published rates.

Yes. Enphase, SolarEdge, and Tesla accounts can be transferred to the homeowner or to a new servicing contractor. If your installer used its own portal that went dark, the gateway underneath is usually one of those three and still reporting to the manufacturer. Only a dead gateway needs hardware; the rest is account work.
