Battery not charging or backup not working: what to check and what it costs

A battery that will not charge, or a backup that did nothing during the last outage, is more often a settings or communications problem than a dead battery. A battery diagnostic is $250 to $500 and covers communications between the battery, the inverter, and the gateway, the reserve and mode settings, the state of health, and the backup transfer path, with a written finding. Module or gateway replacement is quoted per system. Do not open anything: a residential battery is a high-energy DC device and the enclosure stays closed.

Check this first

  1. Open the app and read the mode and the reserve setting. Self-consumption, time of use, and backup-only behave very differently, and a reserve set at a high percentage means the battery is holding charge on purpose rather than failing to take it. Enphase, Tesla, and Generac all expose this in the homeowner app.
  2. Check whether the app is live at all. A battery that reports nothing may simply be behind a dead gateway, in which case start with the monitoring app offline page. No data is not the same as no charge.
  3. Look at the breaker positions in the main panel and the backup panel. Battery systems typically have their own labeled breakers plus a separate backup subpanel. A tripped breaker there explains a backup that did nothing while the battery itself was fine. Reset it once and note whether it holds.

Stop there. Do not open the battery enclosure, the disconnect, or the gateway.

Why this matters here

Storm season runs June through November, and the single worst moment to discover that a backup was never configured correctly is the afternoon the grid goes down. Lee County reported 129,000 LCEC and 111,000 FPL customers without power at its October 10, 2024 briefing after Milton, and Ian’s damage on September 28, 2022 left far longer outages: the National Hurricane Center recorded a 130-knot landfall at Cayo Costa, and rebuilding the electric system on Pine Island ran into March 2023. Owners with batteries found out in those weeks whether their backup covered the refrigerator, the well pump, and a few outlets, or nothing at all.

The other local factor is heat. Batteries in an uninsulated Cape Coral garage run warm, and heat is what shortens cell life. A battery in shade with airflow around it ages more slowly than the same battery on a west wall.

The Generac PWRcell footnote

Pink Energy, formerly Power Home Solar, filed Chapter 7 on October 7, 2022 listing an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 creditors, and many of its Florida systems used Generac PWRcell inverters and batteries. Those owners have hardware with a manufacturer behind it and no installer in front of it. The equipment warranty follows the equipment, the workmanship warranty is gone, and getting the site into your own account is the first step to filing anything at all. That takeover is the orphaned system service, and the general version is on the installer closed page.

What to expect on the call

Tell us the brand and roughly the install year, and send a screenshot of the battery screen in the app plus a photo of the equipment and its label. Most of these visits end with a settings correction, a communications fix, or a clear written statement of what the backup actually covers and what it would cost to widen it. If a module has genuinely failed, ask for the warranty status to be checked by serial before quoting, because on a covered unit the honest bill is labor rather than hardware. Before hurricane season, a system inspection at $200 to $400 is the cheap way to find all of this out in May instead of in September.

Frequently Asked Questions

My solar battery is not charging. What is the most likely cause?

In order: a settings or reserve configuration that is doing exactly what it was told, a gateway or communications failure between the battery and the inverter, a grid or backup breaker in the wrong position, and only then an actual battery module fault. Settings and communications are the most common causes.

The power went out and the battery did not carry the house. Why?

Most residential batteries only back up a subset of circuits through a separate backup panel, not the whole house, and air conditioning is often deliberately left out. If nothing at all came on, the usual causes are a backup gateway that failed to detect the outage, a tripped breaker in the backup panel, or a battery sitting at a reserve level that was set too low.

What does battery service cost?

A battery diagnostic is $250 to $500 and covers communications, settings, state of health, the backup transfer path, and a written finding. Module or gateway replacement is quoted per system, because prices vary widely between Tesla, Enphase, LG, and Generac hardware and depend on what the manufacturer will supply under warranty.

Is the battery warranty still good if my installer closed?

The manufacturer's battery warranty follows the equipment and generally survives, subject to its own terms on capacity retention and registration. The installer's workmanship warranty does not. Getting the system into your own monitoring account is usually the first step to filing anything, because the serials and the history live there.
