Solar Inverter Replacement Cost Calculator

Tell it what failed, roughly how big the system is, and whether the replacement is a like-for-like swap, and this gives you the typical range. The numbers come from the pricing page and nothing is gated behind an email.

Two honest notes before you use it. First, an inverter replacement is a permitted electrical job, and it can touch the interconnection agreement that your net metering rides on. That is why the permit line is in the estimate rather than a surprise later. Second, the single biggest variable this tool cannot see is warranty status. Enphase publishes a 25-year limited warranty on its IQ and M-series microinverters and SolarEdge publishes 25 years on optimizers and 12 on inverters, and those warranties follow the hardware even when the company that installed it has closed. If the manufacturer supplies the part, the bill is labor, and the estimate above is high by the price of the unit.

What each answer changes

  • What is being replaced sets the part family. A wall-mounted string inverter is one unit and one price. Microinverters and optimizers are per unit and get cheaper per unit in multiples, because the roof access is shared. If you are not sure which architecture you have, the one panel dark page explains how the app tells you.
  • System size is the unit cost and the wiring. A small unit on an existing footprint is the bottom. A large unit that needs a new disconnect, a rapid shutdown transmitter, and conduit rework is the top.
  • Permit and interconnection is mostly a timeline question. Like for like is documented on the permit. A different model or a bigger unit means a new utility application before the swap, and that sets a month of lead time rather than a week.

Before you use it, confirm the fault

An inverter that is dark is not always a dead inverter. A tripped PV breaker, a grid voltage event, or a gateway that stopped reporting all look like a failure from the kitchen. Read the inverter red light and error code page and the production dropped page first, and photograph the display, the model label, and the app. A diagnostic visit is $150 to $350 and is usually applied to the repair, and it is cheaper than replacing hardware that was working.

If the roof is also due for replacement, run the detach and reset estimator as well. Doing the inverter during the reset saves a second permit and a second visit. Brand-specific failure patterns and warranty claim steps are on the Enphase, SolarEdge, and SMA, Fronius and Tesla pages, and the utility rules are in the permits and interconnection guide.

Estimator

What will my inverter replacement cost?

Three questions. The range is built from the same inverter prices on the pricing page, so you have a number before anyone opens anything.

Estimated replacement range Typical Cape Coral pricing, before anyone visits

Above 10 kW sits outside the published 5 to 10 kW residential range and is quoted individually. If the manufacturer supplies the unit under warranty, you pay labor only; either way, ask for the serial and the in-service date to be checked before quoting.

Send this estimate to the quote form

An estimate, not a quote. The firm number comes after the fault is confirmed on site, and it does not move after that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these numbers come from?

The pricing page: $1,500 to $3,500 installed for a residential string inverter in the 5 to 10 kW class, $300 to $600 each for a microinverter or optimizer with several at once cheaper per unit, and $200 to $500 for the permit and the utility interconnection paperwork. Nothing here is invented for the calculator.

Why does a different inverter model take longer?

Because the utility agreement names your equipment. FPL's Tier 1 interconnection agreement calls for a new application and interconnection agreement at least 30 calendar days before a modification that increases the system's rated output, and LCEC runs its own tiered process. A like-for-like swap is normally a service week; a larger or different unit is a month.

My installer is gone. Does that change the price?

It changes the paperwork, not the rate. The manufacturer warranty follows the equipment, so the serial gets checked first: SolarEdge publishes 12 years on inverters and 25 on optimizers, and Enphase publishes 25 years on IQ and M-series microinverters. If the part is covered, the bill is labor. The permit and interconnection history stays on file with the county and the utility under your address.

Should I repair the old inverter instead?

Almost never. Residential string inverters run roughly 10 to 15 years, field board repair is rarely offered, and parts for brands that have left the U.S. residential market are scarce. On a 12-year-old unit the honest quote is a replacement number, and on an older unit with no like-for-like option it may be a retrofit to a current architecture that restores per-panel monitoring.
