Solar Panel Removal and Reinstall Cost Calculator

Pick your panel count, the new roof material, who is setting the attachments, and whether the array is going back on, and this gives you a typical range before anyone climbs a ladder. Every number comes from the pricing page, not from a lead form, and there is no email gate.

Two things worth knowing before you use it. First, the per-panel price covers the whole cycle: detach 1 to 3 days before tear-off, string labeling, on-site storage, conduit capped and disconnects locked out, then rails, panels, wiring, rapid shutdown, and labeling on the new roof, followed by inverter startup, monitoring verification, and the final inspection. It is not just lifting panels off. Second, the reinstall is a permitted job. Lee County requires a permit to add or modify any photovoltaic system, along with signed and sealed wind-load documentation for the roof zone the panels sit in, and the City of Cape Coral permits its own solar and electrical work. A bid that does not carry that line is not cheaper, it is incomplete.

What each answer changes

  • Panel count is the biggest lever, because the job is priced per panel. Count them in a photo of the roof if you are not sure; a rough count is enough for an estimate.
  • Roof type is labor. Shingle is the fastest reset. Tile has to be lifted and re-set around every attachment with a more involved flashing detail, which is why it sits at the top. Standing-seam metal takes clamp attachments with no penetrations at all, which makes it the cleanest and usually the cheapest.
  • Attachments are a real cost that moves between two invoices depending on who sets them. New flashed attachments run $25 to $60 each and a 20-panel array has 30 to 50 of them. The decision belongs in the roofing contract before tear-off.
  • Permit and paperwork covers the reinstall permit, the wind-load documentation, and the utility filing if anything about the interconnection changed. Removal without a reinstall is a different, simpler job.

What it cannot see

Corroded rails and clamps on a canal-front home, racking from a company that used non-standard parts and then closed, a roof that changes material and therefore changes the wind-load calculation, and a roofing schedule that leaves the panels stacked for weeks instead of days. Those get found at the plan review and quoted before anything comes off the roof.

If the inverter is also near end of life, run the inverter replacement estimator too. Doing both during the same window saves a second permit and a second visit; ask us whether that math works for your system. The full process and the lines to put in the roofing contract are on the detach and reset page, and the permitting detail is in the Lee County permits and interconnection guide.

Estimator

What will it cost to take my panels off and put them back?

Four questions. The range is built from the same detach and reset prices on the pricing page, so you see it before anyone climbs a roof.

Estimated detach and reset range Typical Cape Coral pricing, before anyone visits

Attachment counts follow panel counts, so a small array lands near the bottom of that line and a 30-panel array near the top. Corroded racking near a saltwater canal, off-site storage if the roofing job stalls, and a change of roof material are the three things that move a quote after the photos.

Send this estimate to the quote form

An estimate, not a quote. The firm number comes after photos or a visit show the array, the racking, and the roofer's schedule, and it does not move after that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these numbers come from?

The same table on the pricing page: detach and reset at $200 to $400 per panel, new flashed attachments at $25 to $60 each, and permit and interconnection paperwork at $200 to $500. The calculator applies the per-panel range to your panel count and adjusts for roof type, which is what actually decides where in that band a job lands.

How accurate is it before anyone visits?

Close enough to budget with and to compare bids against. Panel count and roof type carry most of the price, and both are visible from a photo. What a calculator cannot see is corroded hardware, non-standard racking from an installer who is gone, or a roofing schedule that strands the panels on the ground for three weeks.

Do I have to give an email to see the result?

No. There is no gate and no signup. The range updates as you change the dropdowns, and sending it to the quote form is optional. If you do send it, the answers come with it so nobody has to ask you the same four questions again.

Should the roofer or the solar crew set the attachments?

Either works, and it has to be decided in writing before tear-off, because whoever sets them warrants the roof at those points. Many Lee County roofers prefer to set the flashings during the roof so their warranty stays clean. If they do, that line drops out of this estimate and appears on their invoice instead.
